Short Bio
Kevin Barton attended Northern Illinois University where he graduated with two masters degrees: Sport and Exercise Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Kevin’s counseling approach stems from Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and Positive Psychology. He believes that often athletes hold negative or irrational perceptions of their ability and performances which can lead to emotions boiling over during stressful moments, being too hard on one’s self, and performance anxiety. He also believes athletes have been conditioned to respond to negative self- and distant talk which lowers confidence and performance. Kevin’s areas of focus with counseling and mental performance include ADHD, achievement, athlete identity, mood disorders including anxiety and depression, men’s mental health, motivation, perfectionism, personality disorders, stress disorders, trauma, team building, and leadership development. Kevin prefers to take a preventive approach to those issues and build a strong foundation of mental skills and coping strategies to help athletes become resilient in the face of adversity. He also aims to empower clients to be successful in all areas of life: athletically, academically, professionally, and personally.
